It\u2019s a type of hair coloring method that gives your hair \u201cthat sun-kissed look\u201d\u2014i.e. your hair gradually gets lighter and lighter. What\u2019s more, it adds depth, it is easy to maintain and it looks rather fabulous (if you ask us!).<\/p>\n

What Does the Word Balayage Mean?<\/h2>\n

Balayage is French and means \u201csweeping.\u201d You add color across your hair in a sweeping motion\u2014going from dark to light.<\/p>\n

How Is Balayage Different from Highlights?<\/h2>\n

Highlights tend to start close to your roots and you use foil to create \u201cstripes\u201d of another color, or colors.<\/p>\n

Balayage on the other hand, is a freehand painting technique where you add lighter\u2014and sometimes darker\u2014tones\/shades to your hair. The hair slowly gets lighter and lighter, so that the tips of your hair are the lightest.<\/p>\n

Unlike highlights, there is no sharp outgrowth lines and therefore it doesn\u2019t look bad as the hair grows out. In fact, one of the reasons people do balayage is to grow out their highlights!<\/p>\n

How Is Balayage Different from Ombr\u00e9?<\/h2>\n

Ombr\u00e9 is a technique where, again, your hair goes from dark to light. The difference between ombr\u00e9 and balayage is the same as that between a complete color job and highlights\u2014with ombr\u00e9 there aren\u2019t different shades. That\u2019s to say, the color is blended from dark to light, but it\u2019s uniform in that there aren\u2019t any darker and lighter strands. The hair simply looks dip dyed, but without any sharp lines.<\/p>\n

Any. You can use any color to go from dark to light. If your hair is previously dyed, however, there might be things to consider.<\/p>\n

Likewise, any type of hair is suitable\u2014thin, thick, straight, or curly!<\/p>\n

The only time balayage does not work is on a pixie cut\u2014you need a tiny bit of length to be able to get the different shades of color!<\/p>\n

How Long Does the Balayage Process Take?<\/h2>\n

This depends on how much of an overhaul you\u2019re looking to do! A few babylights can take a mere 45 minutes, while a more overarching process can take up to three hours.<\/p>\n

In short, no. It\u2019s one of the best coloring jobs you can have done where maintenance is concerned. As it can grow out without looking bad, you don\u2019t even have to do it again if you don\u2019t want to! Naturally, if you like the style you need to refresh it after a while, but certainly not as often as you would have to with highlights.<\/p>\n
